Pella, Part 5

Walt the Pocket Kangaroo helped me shelve books in the library one day.  I used to work in the library and I missed shelving books and pulling markers, so Lana let me work some.
Study Hall in the Lower Chapel is the cool place to be.
The Lower Chapel is also a great place for life chats and praying with friends.
Walt the Pocket Kangaroo enjoyed sitting in the sun journaling by the pond with me.
Walt the Pocket Kangaroo also enjoyed the sunny weather for reading outside in the sun.  I think we were reading a preaching book at this point.
Sarah G got "stuck" in the telephone booth.
We decided to engage in some foolishness and built a camera stand so we could take a picture of ourselves with the telephone booth.  It was an adventure.

Pella, Part 4

This post could also have been called "Adventures with Chelsea Bell and Sara", because that is what it is.  Chelsea Bell (who really loves squirrels) and Sara are wonderful friends of mine.  I had two sleepovers with them this week.  Last year, we often had "Tea and Tales" together (at Ten Thirty in room Two-Thirty-something on Tuesdays and Thursdays).  They make me smile really much and I value their friendship immensely.
Sara hanging out on her bed.  She would intermittently give Chelsea the "stink eye", but I told her I wouldn't take a picture of that.
I don't actually know what happened here...I do know they were throwing the pink and green flower thingy at each other.
Sara, Snowball, Chelsea and Chelsea's friend (I'm bad with names...) posing for a picture.
Snowball and Albus were having an in-depth conversation.
Sampson decided to join in. He has missed Snowball and Albus.
Chelsea Bell and Sara were getting ready for story time.  Except they laughed a lot during my story and it really wasn't a laughing story.  But I still love them!

Pella, Part 3

My Pella adventures have been continuing.  One day I got to spend the afternoon with a dear friend (Kathy) and her adorable children (Porter, age 2 and Alise, age 4 months).  Kathy was very dear to me throughout my time at Central.  We met almost weekly all four years to drink tea and talk about life.  Porter joined us for tea throughout (as soon as he was big enough to drink tea, he started drinking it too).  Alise was just born this year so I had not met her yet.  I was super excited to meet this little girl who I had been praying for ever since the day last May when Kathy gave me a hug and told me she had something to tell me (actually, I suspected before she told me, but that's beside the point).
Baby Alise was sleeping when I got there, but that didn't last too terribly long
Alise was enjoying her new blanket
We went to the park while Kathy ran an errand.  Porter loved crawling around (and playing in the sand)
Alise snuggled up in the sling and slept the whole time
Snack time!
Walt the Pocket Kangaroo also met Alise
All of us together!

Pella, Part 2

My adventures in Pella continue.  I spend a lot of time in the chapel "study hall".  I do actually get some studying done.  But....
...sometimes strange things happen in the chapel.
The guys just take it in stride...
And then decide to join in...
This chair was a poor choice.  Not comfy.
This chair was a good choice.  Very comfy.
The best part of this whole strangeness is that 3 of the 5 people hanging upside down from the furniture were getting paid to do it.

Pella, Part 1

I'm spending my spring break in Pella, at Central College, where I did my undergrad work.  Walt the Pocket Kangaroo is my travelling partner and we are having all kinds of adventures.  Sometimes I remember to take pictures of these adventures.  Here's a sampling from the first few days:
We crossed the Mississippi into Iowa and it was sunny.  We had a big icky storm around Chicago so the sunshine was welcome.  It was also warmer in Iowa than in Michigan.
Iowa is a real place.  It is more than a state of mind (that was for you Rob!).  States of mind don't come with road signs.
I felt a little like a tourist and got my picture taken with the huge wooden shoes.  In all the 4 years I was here, I never got a picture with the shoes...
It's spring time in Pella.  There were pretty flowers blooming.

I went on a walk with these two wonderful people (Pinky and Jesse).  Jesse and I *may have* made eyes at each other (just to make Pinky mad. She doesn't like to share)

Happiness

Seeing this countdown box on my iGoogle just made me happy today:
That was my countdown to my trip to Pella.  It's expired.  I'm in Pella.  Sitting in the lower chapel listening to organ music.  It's good.  I went to CUIFS this morning and got hugs.  I hung out in Graham last night.   It's good to be back.
This also made me happy:
It's almost time to make my Easter gingerbread house. This excites me.
That is all.  Just wanted to share my happiness.

Chocolate Chip Memories

I got the munchies one afternoon while working on Greek homework.  I decided to make myself a snack that would take time to eat (the munchies often presents as a symptom of boredom) and would be neat (I didn't want to make a mess or spill food on my text books or LDK's lexicon).  I decided on chocolate chips and raisins and went about fixing myself a small bowl of them.  As I sat back down at the table, a wave of memories came flooding back.  I was transported back to Saturday mornings during my last two years of high school.
Every week my youngest brothers and I would get up super early.  They'd sit down for a quick breakfast (well, with Isaac nothing was every quick...his toast almost always came in the car with us), while I put together their lunches.  It was always peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Saturdays (I had not yet developed a peanut allergy at this point, now me making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches would be a very bad choice).  Saturday was the only day they could have peanut butter and jelly because their school was nut free.  Church on Sunday was nut free too, but they showered Saturday night, so we took advantage of it.  With peanut butter and jelly packed for both of them (and something else for me...I wasn't a big peanut butter and jelly fan), I'd get out three small Tupperware containers. I'd fill the bottom 1/3 -1/2 the container with chocolate chips and then top it off with raisins.  I'd put the lids on them and into the lunch bag they'd go.  A few cookies, some fresh fruit if we had it, and Rubbermaid sippy-bottles of juice would top off our lunch bag.  I'd make myself a bowl of creamed rice cereal (for the road), make sure they had their school books and clean faces and we'd be off.
As soon as we were far enough away from home, we'd turn the radio on and listen to "Paws and Tales", followed by "Adventures in Odyssey".  If we couldn't pick either program up that day, there would be a CD or tape of German children's songs for us to sing along with. For the first year I'd drop them off at their school with instructions to stay out of trouble until class started and then head over to my school.  The second year (I'd graduated from my program after the first year), we'd just go to their school and they would play with the "German fun bag" while I directed traffic in the parking lot. Or I'd quiz them on their vocabulary while parking cars.  Then they'd be off to their classes and shortly after I'd go to the Kindergarten room where I worked as a TA.
After class we'd go to Kinderchor and I'd sign some of the songs while trying to keep Isaac focussed. Then, we'd load back up in the van and either go to the grocery to get things we couldn't get at home (and occasionally a special treat) or head straight for home.  They'd munch on their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and we'd all enjoy our chocolate chips and raisins.  We'd listen to the radio until we got close to home and then switch back over to CD or tape
Chocolate chips and raisins were as much a part of my Saturday mornings as getting out of bed.  I'm pretty sure the boys would have been more upset if I forgot to pack the chocolate chips and raisins than if I'd forgotten to pack their sandwiches. And now, as I sit here, eating my chocolate chips and raisins (and not so much working on my homework), I've been transported back.  Back to a time before seizures.  Back to a time before college.  Back to a time before seminary.  Back, back, back.  All the good memories, all the things I'd rather forget (I mean, who really wants to remember everything about high school?), all of it was coming back.

It's funny how something as simple as a snack can bring back memories.  What brings back memories for you?  Is it a food?  A place?  A song? A smell? Are the pleasant memories or unpleasant or a mixture of both?
